Union Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology Sachin 
Pilot today said his Ministry has approached the RBI to provide license to the 
Indian Postal Department to convert it into a banking service of the country.
Addressing a press conference at the Regional Institute of e-Learning and 
Information technology Merema, about 15 km away from Kohima, Mr Pilot said there 
are 1.55 Lakh Post Office branches throughout the state and with the 
introduction of modern equipment, the Department has lifted its level of compete 
with the Banks. 
For the improvement of work not only in postal service and 
various Money Deposit Schemes, his Ministry was thinking to revamp the Postal 
Department to a banking sector. He said the country was the third for using 
internet after China and the US, although the internet rate is only 12 per cent 
in the country, which required improvement to bring the country into the global 
standard.
