Dear Comrades,
BHUBANESWAR: Resentment is brewing among postal department
employees, engaged in letter dispatch wing of Bhubaneswar division,
following the department's delay in procuring parcel scanning gadgets to
 prevent any untoward incidents.
 The employees, who are scared
after the recent discovery of two parcels with fuse and detonator
inside, expressed their safety concerns at the 7th biennial conference
of All India Postal Employees Union (group-C), Bhubaneswar divisional
branch here on Friday. The conference was inaugurated by BJP leader
Chandan Mitra.
While the state election commissioner Ajit Tripathy had received a
parcel with a fuse on January 13, the chief secretary's office on
January 20 received a parcel with detonator, sending cops into tizzy.
One postal employee Pranabananda Dash was injured in a parcel bomb
explosion in Suryanagar on January 3, 2002.
 "Since the parcels
are booked and delivered through post offices, it is certainly a matter
of serious concern for the employees and properties of India Post. The
department should immediately procure scanners and bomb detectors," said
 AIPEU secretary B Samal.
Earlier twin city police commissioner B
K Sharma had asked the department of post to install the machines to
avoid any eventuality. "We briefed them about the configuration of such
machines and taught how to handle mails," Sharma said.
Postal employees said bomb detectors should also be installed at railway mail service (RMS) points and sorting hubs.

"As of now, we have a parcel scanner at the general post office here.
Steps are being taken to install the gadgets at busy post offices,"
senior superintendent of post offices (Bhubaneswar division) Aditya
Kumar Nayak told TOI.
The postal employees also demanded
establishment of a second head post office in Bhubaneswar to ease the
workload from the general post office.
