Dear Comrades,
In its bid to add a touch of modernity and stay relevant, India Post
has partnered with Tata Consultancy Services, to come up with Core
System Integrator (CSI) — a project designed to completely computerise
India Post counter operations.
The project will cost the postal department a staggering Rs 1,400 crore
and will cover 25,400 post offices all over the country. However, the
rural postal network will not be covered.
“The CSI will provide solutions for main and counter operations, HR,
personnel and accounts and finance departments. It will not only provide
data but also service solutions, a help desk for the employees and a
call centre service for the public,” explained Alok Saxena, deputy
general director, India Post.
The IT giant will also be responsible for providing training to the
employees to familiarise them with the new software. Along with these
facilities, 1,000 new ATMs will also be installed, in various parts of
the country.
The project has been divided into three parts — pilot, phase 1 and
phase 2. The first phase will cover six circles, which include Assam,
Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. The
second phase will cover the rest of the nation.
CSI will not only include the computerisation of the post offices but
will also provide technical support to the post masters in the form of
devices that will help them in mail tracking and customer call service.
“The department will give the post masters the devices and TCS will provide the solutions,” said Saxena.
The project launched in September has a deadline of March 31st. “After
the last location goes live, which will be in another eighteen months,
TCS will take care of maintenance for the next five years. After that,
like all government departments, there will be the process of
re-tender,” said Saxena.
