It is hard to miss the brightly painted letter
boxes in Kala Ghoda’s Rampart Row. Created by artists Reha Shishodia and
Nayanjeet Nikam, the three letter boxes depict the three facets of
Mumbai — Dharavi, Bollywood and dabbawalahs.
The installation, titled ‘Tapal Dhadak’, is made of metal and fiber
glass, each box being 6 feet tall and 2 feet wide. “You can also leave
messages for your loved ones on the post cards provided by us and we
will be happy to get it deliver them post our event,” says Shishodia.
The installation is also a tribute to the Indian postal service. “The
postal service delivers mail to nearly 140 million addresses, six days a
week. Every year, this number increases by two million. The letter box
is chosen by us as our main representation apart from being the best way
to spread personal message and create awareness too,” she adds.
Kala Ghoda’s Rampart Row is home to many art installations this year.
Based on the theme ‘Moving Images’, the installations depict the unique
flavour of Mumbai. Apart from ‘Tapal Dhadak’, other installations that
dot Kala Ghoda this year include a vintage Ambassador car layered with
coal and studded with diamonds, a huge amoeba made of papier mache and
OHP sheets and a beautiful hand-painted open-air autorickshaw.
