Unique Identity Card elicits good response in Madurai

Dear Comrades,

The process of issuing Unique Identification (UID) cards has begun and there has been a good response from the public in Madurai.
‘Aadhar' number, the 12-digit identification card, will be issued free of cost to all residents of India through the Unique Identification Authority of India established by the Central government. The offices of Karvy Data Management in the city are buzzing with activity owing to a heavy rush for the UID cards.
“Karvy Data Management has bagged the national-level contract for this project. Along with us, a few banks also are engaged in the work. Applicants will receive their identity card within three months through India Post,” P. Ravi, Regional Head (Product Distribution), Karvy Stock Broking Limited, K. K. Nagar branch, said on Tuesday.
Applications for UID cards are being received at Karvy's three offices in Madurai — K. K. Nagar, Goods Shed Street and Bypass Road. All that the applicant has to do is to fill up a simple application form and submit it along with supporting documents for photo identity and address proof.
“It is for every individual in our country and for all ages. There is no age limit and even a three-month-old infant will be issued the card. Several parents are coming with their children, and in the last two months we received over 1,500 applications and more people are coming every day,” Mr. Ravi said.

Biometric exercise

Once the application form is verified by the staff, they will do the biometric exercise. For the photo identity, the applicants are given a wide choice. They can submit any proof — passport, PAN card, family card, voter identity card, driving licence or any government photo identity card.
Similarly, for address proof, they can give photocopy of bank passbook, electricity bill, insurance policy, ration card, driving licence or passport, among other options. For date of birth proof, they have to give relevant document support.
“We are forwarding the applications on a daily basis to our head office. They will forward them to the Central government authorities for the rest of the process. At the most, an applicant will be able to get the card in three months. We are working on all days from 9.a.m. to 6 p.m. for this citizenship card project,” Mr. Ravi said.
