India's postal dept extends money transfer services in Karnataka

Bangalore: India's Department of Posts (DoP) has introduced money transfer services across 59 head post offices in Karnataka state in partnership with the United States-based global money transfer company MoneyGram International Inc to aid Indians residing abroad in transferring their money back home expeditiously.

"Receiving money is simple. The person remitting the money with any of MoneyGram International agent overseas will have to pass on the reference number to the receiver, who will get the money in these post offices in no time by showing any of the ID such as ration cards," a senior official of the DoP said.

Earlier Septemer, the DoP and MoneyGram International had inked a pact to provide money transfer services through post offices spread across various states in India.

Head post offices in Karnataka that will offer money transfer services include Bangalore GPO, Rajajinagar HO, Jalalhalli HO, R.T. Nagar HO, HAL II Stage HO, Basavanagudi HO, Jayanagar HO and Channapatna HO.

The postal department is the chief supervisor of the government's small savings scheme. It also provides financial products via its 155,000 offices.

Indian postal department has a network of 144,000 post offices pan-India with Rs 5.6 trillion worth of deposits.
