Taiwan, China to jointly launch e-packet service: industry leader

Dear Comrades,

aipei, July 24 (CNA) The official postal service providers in Taiwan and China plan to launch a new service around October for businesses to mail e-packets of less than 2 kilograms at lower prices, an industry leader said Wednesday.

This marks a big step toward the expansion of cross-Taiwan Strait postal service cooperation, said Lee Ji-chu, chairperson of Taiwan's Chunghwa Post Co., Ltd.

Lee told reporters that she had discussed the initiative with the China Post Group, China's official postal enterprise, during a visit to China last week.

Currently, the average cost of mailing parcels across the Taiwan Strait is calculated based on the pricing methods of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) convention and does not take distance into account.

Lee said the state-run postal companies in Taiwan and China should take advantage of their wide service to strengthen their competitiveness.

Chunghwa Post and China Post Group have reached an agreement to launch a new e-packet service for small and medium enterprises to mail small packets of less than 2 kg across the strait, she said.

E-packet is an international service offered by China Post to meet the needs of the international e-commerce market.

In the initial stage, the service offered U.S.-bound parcel delivery service to Chinese eBay sellers.

Through the shipping tool (http://shippingtool.ebay.cn/) offered by www.eBay.cn, sellers can automatically synchronize sales data and easily manage, download and print parcel forms, including the recipient's address and customs declaration forms.

Currently, the average weight of parcels shipped by Chunghwa Post between Taiwan and China is about 700 grams, at a cost of about NT$250.

According to an agreement on cross-strait postal service cooperation, after the e-packet service is launched, the cost of mailing packages of less than 2 kg is expected to drop to below NT$180, 30 percent lower than the current level.

The service is aimed at expanding the online shopping market across the strait.

China Post Group has promised to set up a special zone on its online shopping platform for the promotion of Taiwan products, according to Lee.
