‘Nirbhaya’ distress alarm launched

The Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), a Central government undertaking has launched a unique product ‘Nirbhaya’, a GPS-based tele distress alarm device.

Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission Ratan Kumar Sinha and secretary, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) released this product in Mumbai. Speaking on the occasion, Sinha said that self-reliance is the guiding beacon of DAE and brings out innovative products regularly through in house research development. One such product is ‘Nirbhaya’ which immensely benefits large section of society. ‘Nirbhaya’ is developed at BARC and commercialised by the ECIL. This compact electronic device, used in conjunction with a cell phone, sends information to near and dear ones including police in case of severe distress or fear of attack.

 
Once activated, the device could send SMSes to five chosen contacts about the user’s location through the mobile. It could primarily aid women in distress situations such as an attack or a medical emergency. “The SMS alert has a pre-formatted user defined message and GPS coordinates (location) of the device. It will continue to send the latest GPS location every minute to the five programmed phone numbers. It is paired with users’ cell phones through bluetooth.”

This simple device launched by ECIL will be very helpful to children, students, working women and senior citizens. It can easily be carried inside a pocket or purse.

R Chidambaram, principal scientific advisor to the Central government, P Sudhakar, chairman & managing director, ECIL, SS Bajaj, chairman, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), CK Pithawa, Director (E&I), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and others were also present on the occasion.
