Srinagar: Chief Post Master General John Samuel today announced that Lal Chowk post office would be modernized to facilitate tourist and business establishments in Jammu and Kashmir.
“As parts of attracting tourists Lal Chowk Post Office will provide picture postcards greeting cards, tourism related material, local souvenirs and packaging material. Tourism can also get high quality dry fruits, saffron, Shawls and Kashmir handicrafts,” Samuel said.
He said that the products would be provided in association with Jammu & Kashmir government Handicraft Emporium.
Samuel said that the post office served many business customers, Banks, business firms, government office and shopping malls.
“The post office will be made into a one-stop-shop that will provide service to individuals as well as business customers. The Post Shop will be on international standard and it will primarily deal with Philately products, packaging material, stationery items. People visiting the post office require packing materials, envelopes, paper,” Samuel asserted.
He further told Agence India Press, that the Post Shop would provide the convenience by selling stationery greeting cards and packing material.
“All Philately products including philately stamps, special covers, miniature sheets, stamp-packs etc and local souvenirs, local products specially saffron, dry fruits, Pashmina shawls etc, will be sold through post shop and this builds the local business businesses,” he added.
The Post Master General also announced that Lal Chowk post office would be providing India Post ‘Gold Coin’ service. India Post was selling 99.99 percent pure 24 carat gold coin of Valcambi, Switzerland, and with this the Gold Coin service was being extended to Lal Chowk post office also.
He also announced that Western Union Money Transfer (WUMT) service would also be available at the Post Office, and payment would be made to the costumers based on the transfer of money from international countries.
He informed that the‘Post Shop’ would be made operational by March 2012, which would be fully computerized and the customer could have all facilities of postal service speed post, Registered Post parcels and Saving Bank service.
He also announced that 271 Post Office would be fully computerized and networked during that year. “In additional to speed post articles all Registered Post articles will also be tracked,” he added.
