TRICHY: Soon, public who have invested in post office savings
scheme can transact through exclusive Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs)
that will come up at some post offices in Trichy region. The
facility,which will come up once the postal department completes the
process of connecting the post offices under the core banking facility,
will enhance convenience to account holders.
The postal department has decided to bring all the branches under the core-banking facility. As a pilot project, the ATM centres will be set up in six head post offices in Trichy, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Kallakurichi, Kumbakonam and Nagapattinam, probably, in June this year.

The Postmaster General for central Tamil Nadu, Bahadur Singh explained
the functioning of the new client-friendly initiative of the department.
"Our main objective is to bring the activities of more than 3,500
branches under the core banking facility. In the first phase, six ATM
centres will be opened in six head post offices in the region. Our
customers will be given ATM cards so that they can withdraw money and
check their account balances in the dedicated ATMs. But they are not
entitled to use their cards in bank ATMs. Likewise, the banking
customers cannot use their cards in postal-ATMs."
In the second
phase, 18 more post offices will be connected under core banking
facilities and 78 sub-post offices will be equipped with the facility in
the third phase in 2013-14. Likewise, the facility would be extended to
rest of the branches in the region, added Bahadur Singh.
Statistics reveal there are 53, 04,694 various live accounts in 3,507 post offices in central Tamil Nadu
region. The postal department has reached Rs 88 crore revenue against
the target of Rs 103 crore till February 2013 by mobilising various
types of deposits. The postal chief was optimistic about reaching the
target revenue well before March-end.
The department, which is
earning almost equal amount of revenue through mail services, will
conduct a recruitment drive next month to select candidates for 75 posts
in Group C cadre in the central region, said Bahadur.
