MLA leads gherao in Fatorda post office

Dear Comrades,

MARGAO: Following his seven-day ultimatum to post office authorities in Fatorda, local MLA Vijai Sardesai, a large group of residents in tow, gheraoed the premises on Tuesday.

Sardesai had earlier asked the postal authorities to address residents' grievances about delays in postal delivery. Following the gherao, he said people were upset as they had not been receiving important documents on time. He claimed the Fatorda post office is facing a total breakdown in machinery.
He's demanded that the district administration intervene as the public is being denied a basic amenity that comes under the purview of the central government.
"The authorities at the Fatorda post office have said that they are understaffed and their requests to get additional staff have been denied on the grounds that the area under their jurisdiction has not changed.
"Fatorda is an urban residential area and while their area may not have increased the population has surely increased and this justifies the need for additional staff," said Sardesai.
When pointed out that the Our Lady of Rosary Church has asked the post office to vacate its premises, Sardesai said he would intervene as an MLA only if the postal authorities increased the staff. He added that he would speak to the PWD about relocating the post office to a fully functional office at its quarters.
