India Post plans to bring mobile money order to region

Dear Comrades,

NAGPUR: Details of around 300 post offices of Nagpur region have been sent to Mumbai to begin the mobile money transfer service, which has already been implemented in Mumbai and Pune regions.

"We were asked to submit details of post offices in the region with the maximum money order transactions. We made a list of 300 offices spanning the entire region and have sent it to Mumbai. We are awaiting further directions," said a senior official.

The mobile money order service entails placing mobile handsets pre-installed with the required software at the centres selected for the service. A person intending to send a mobile money order has to come to the post office and fill in the required form and deposit the money.

Following this, the sender will receive an SMS of intimation on his or her mobile phone, along with a six digit secret transfer code. The sender has to forward the receiver this secret code to allow the receiver to withdraw the money. The receiver also gets a message on his or her phone to inform him of the transfer of money.

"This is an additional service being floated by India Post for its customers, so that they can send and receive money quickly. It is necessary to move ahead with the time. Though we have other services like the instant money transfer and electronic money transfer, each has its own unique features and the mobile money order service too has its own," said an India Post official.

Though the details of post offices in the region have been called for, officials here have not yet been briefed about the working of the system. Some officials say it might take some time before the service is implemented in the region.
