India Post to roll out Post Bank of India soon

The India Post observed the Foundation Day of the Universal Postal Union on October 9 as the World Post Day. It also has been observing the National Postal Week from October 9 to 14 with an aim to create awareness on postal services. When Japan and European countries are in favour of privatisation of their postal services, India is planning to establish Post Bank of India as a subsidiary of the India Post.
The postal services are operational in India since 1854.The Odisha Postal Circle has been working under a Chief Postmaster General since March 1, 1989, and for better administration and services, the circle is divided into three regions (Bhubaneswar, Berhampur and Sambalpur), 18 divisions, three Railway Mail Services divisions, 35 Head Post Offices, 35 Mukhya Dak Ghars, 1,123 Sub Post Offices, 6, 968 Branch Post Offices at village levels and 208 Panchayat Sewa Kendras. This year, the department will open three Sub Post Offices and four Branch Post Offices in the State. A post office serves 4,509 people and covers 19.08 sqkm in Odisha.
India Post has initiated its IT modernisation process during 2010-11 for better performance and customer satisfaction. About 24, 015 urban post offices in the country have been computerised and other 1, 279 offices are yet to be provided with computers. The Union Government has approved “India Post Technology Project-2012” for IT modernisation in a phased manner. In the Odisha Circle, 500 post offices have been computerised and 683 others will be provided with computers this year. Under Project Arrow scheme, 79 offices have been modernised and modernisation work of 17 others is in progress. For providing any where, any time banking, core banking solution has been included in the 11th Five Year Plan. India Post plans to introduce core banking solution besides setting up India Post ATMs and debit cards for its savings account holders. The work for setting up 1, 000 India Post ATMs is in advanced stage and the department is tying up with banks for use of India Post debit card at any ATM of other banks. The ATMs are expected to be rolled out by the end of March 2012 and core banking facilities in 4, 000 branches including 35 head post offices of Odisha Circle may be available on completion of net working of all post offices.
The India Post is having 264, 585, 266 operational small savings accounts including 96 lakh savings accounts of Odisha Circle. It offers financial services like PLI, pension payments and money transfer services through its largest network. The corpus fund of India Post financial services stood at Rs 5,82,832.9 crore as on March 31, 2011.
In Odisha Circle, Finance Marts are working at Bhubaneswar GPO, Cuttack GPO, Berhampur HO, Bhanjanagar HO, Koraput HO, Rourkela HO, Sambalpur HO, Baleswar HO, Bhadrak HO, Puri HO, Dhenkanal HO, Jagatsinghpur HO, Keonjhar HO.
The flood of post office accounts opened by 4.94 NREGS workers helps the India Post earn revenue of Rs 650 crore annually from the Finance Department towards maintenance of those ‘no-frills’ savings accounts. In the Odisha Circle, 16, 07, 000 job card holders have been paid Rs 680 crore during the year 2020-11. The Government has decided to open accounts of all BPL people in post offices to extend financial benefits. Out of 2, 96, 000 BPL card holders, 1, 80, 000 have opened accounts in various post offices in Odisha.
Postal Life Insurance was introduced in 1884. It is the oldest life insurance scheme for the Government employees. Now it caters to employees of Central and State Governments, Nationalised Banks, Local Bodies, Government Aided schools/colleges, universities, PSUs, autonomous financial institutions. Rural PLI scheme was introduced in March 1995 for covering rural people. 166,000 PLI policies and 663,000 RPLI policies are in force in Odisha Circle.
The India Post has introduced online web based domestic money transmission service called iMO which enables the customer to receive money in minutes from any of the identified post office. The electronic money order, eMO, facilitates transmission of ordinary money orders through electronic media without any extra charge from 8,003 post offices at present. India Post has started Mobile Money Order service (MMOS) in 10 post offices each of Bihar and Punjab from June 1, 2011. This will save time and help those who do not have a proper address for physical payment. E- payment is a Many- to- One- Service through which bills of the service provider are paid by customers in post offices. The Business Development and Marketing Directorate of India Post designs , monitors, develops, manages and markets value added premium products like Speed Post, Business Post, Direct Post, Express Parcel Post, Media Post, Logistics Post, E-Bill Post and e-Payment, e-Post, World Net Express, Flat Rate Box, Bill Mail Service and Retail Post Services.
Bhubaneswar / Cuttack GPOs are issuing Address Proof Cards under Retail Post. 135 post offices have been identified for registration of Unique Identification Number (UIDAI) in Odisha and 84,000 names have been registered till September 2011 under the scheme.
HOs/ MDGs at Utkal University, Old Town, Banki, salipur, Sundargarh , Anandpur, Berhampur, Aska, Bhanjanagar and SOs at Gunupur, Umerkote and Junagarh have been identified to provide Passenger Reservation Service( booking of Railway ticket).Ten post offices, including Bhubaneswar GPO, are selling gold coins. Post offices are also selling Joint Entrance forms like OJEE, VIT, AFMC and SRM under Retail Post. Bhubaneswar GPO, Cuttack GPO, Sahidnagar MDG, Ashok Nagar MDG and College Square MDG are identified to book international mail for 220 countries under World Net Express service.
Commemorative postage stamp is designed and printed with greater aesthetic inputs to generate great interest among philatelists. There are 68 Philately Bureaus and 1,111 philatelic counters in different post offices. Bhubaneswar GPO and Cuttack GPO are having philatelic bureaus. The stamp released by India Post on Jaydev’s Geeta Govinda has added a glorious page.
