Over 1700 new post offices in Jharkhand by Dec '11

Dear Comrades,

To be set up under Project Arrow of the Department of Posts, these are aimed at expanding banking operation at panchayat levels across the state.

Ranchi: With a view to cashing on burgeoning economic activities in rural areas, the Jharkhand postal circle has decided to open over 1700 new post offices in uncovered areas of the State.

The new revamp plan—Project Arrow, approved by the Department of Posts, Government of India, envisages opening of at least one branch post office at each panchayat by the end of this year.
So far, postal department has its direct reach to only 2570 out of over 4400 panchayats across the State. Chief Post Master General, Jharkhand, KV Sunder Rajan said the new post offices would be equipped with e-connect facility so as to ensure quick transaction of money.

Post offices happened to be the most preferred outlet for money transaction for labourers getting paid for their work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) programmes. However, they have to rely on banks or cash payments in the absence of post offices and their dependency on manual work.

Officials of the postal department said that the job of post offices in rural would increase considerably after elected panchayat bodies start functioning properly.

“In our bid to ensure transparency and speed in conduct, the department has already embarked upon a massive exercise to computerise all its post offices across the State. Thirty three new post offices, and 150 normal and 200 single-handed post offices working in rural areas would be connected through the net by the year-end,” Rajan said.
