India’s Postal Department has apparently sent back around 50,000 Aadhaar cards issued in Hyderabad to The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), citing non-existing addresses, reports Deccan Chronicle.
The report states that the postal department has informed the civil supplies department, which is the nodal agency for rolling out Aadhaar cards in the state, that they were unable to deliver these cards due to wrong addresses and these cards had remained undelivered in several post offices across Hyderabad city.
This follows a similar development last week where an enrollment agent in Hyderabad had apparently processed 30,000 Aadhaar cards in a span of just six months, out which 800 cards were registered under the physically disabled quota. Upon an investigation by agencies, it was later discovered that these enrollments were done with the help of fake identities and addresses.
Last month, we had also seen a bizzare yet intriguing situation where the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) had issued an Aadhaar card in the name of ‘Mr Kothimeer (coriander)’, son of Mr ‘Pulav’, having an address “Gongura Thota (Hibiscus Cannabinus), Mamidi Kaya Vuru (raw mango village) of Jambuladinne Mandal in Anantapur district” and a picture of a mobile phone as the photo on the Aadhaar card.
These cases raise serious questions about the lack of proper verification involved, before issuing an Aadhaar Card and make you wonder about the various processes put in place by UIDAI to ensure that Aadhaar numbers are not issued to terrorists and anti social elements. Aadhaar was supposed to solve the problem of having a single unique identity system for various KYC involved in opening bank accounts, verifying online transactions and user accounts, activating mobile connections, and applying for passports, due to the extensive biometric data gathered in the process but it seems like it will turn out to be yet another identity document.
