Dear Comrades,

IT is an opportunity to get a perspective of the Indian postal system in all its glory over the years, standing proud against the onslaught of the modern, lightning-fast means of communication. The three-day 10th Uttar Pradesh Philatelic Exhibition which opened on Friday offers an enriching weekend trip to retrace the era of postal stamps with denomination of annas and 5 paise. Besides, there are inland folders, postcards and envelopes issued by the department over the years with varying denomination.
On display at the State Lalit Kala Akademi, Ekta Vihar, Aliganj are stamps issued by the postal department representing Indian heritage through series on festivals, paintings, monuments, wildlife, spices, arts, etc. Besides, there are stalls run by philatelists from various parts of the country, displaying and selling collections of stamps and first day covers new and old. "We also have handwritten documents, comprising official letters, dating back to the late 19th century," says Khalid Sabir from Delhi, as he displays letters bearing stamps of banks and offices that existed in the erstwhile Awadh province. At other stalls by owners from Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and other states, one can even buy paraphernalia such as stamp collection albums, folders, etc. "We have stamps specific to Punjab, like this one on Lala Lajpat Rai, but we have them from all over India, spanning several decades, says HP Singh of Victory Stamps, Amritsar.
Highlight of the event is the 'My Stamp' counter, where you can have 12 of your favourite tickets with your picture. The show will end on Sunday with prize distribution for the invitee and senior competitive class entries.
