In less than a month of the launch of its innovative Post Office On Wheels, the Pune City West Division postal department has generated revenue of over Rs 20 lakh. In a span of around four weeks - from November 1 to November 26 - around 25,745 transactions have been registered, reaching out to around 25,000 Puneites.
“Currently, we are operating with just one van. The response has been so encouraging that we have decided to include East region too. By January, we will launch another van that will cater to the East region,” said Postmaster General, Pune Region, Col K C Mishra, VSM. The transactions done included saving account transactions, recurring deposits, NSC issue, IPO sale, registered letter bookings, speed post bookings, parcels, stamp sales, postage, EMOs, i-Code and Chotukool sales, postal life insurance policies and e-Bill collections to name a few. A fully equipped mobile van that provided various postal services visits five areas in the city everyday, excluding Sundays and postal holidays, spending two hours at each location. As per the schedule, 30 locations were covered in one week that included Parvati, Sahakarnagar, Dhankawadi, Shivajinagar, Model Colony, Range Hills, Sus Road, Kothrud, Karvenagar, Bhugaon, Bhavani Peth and Pune-Satara Road to name a few. The mobile van is equipped with the software and hardware required for the operations along with an UPS and an inverter back-up.
The maximum revenue has been generated through business posts, savings accounts and recurring deposit transactions. From the 10,000 deals of business posts, the department has earned returns of Rs 50,000. “While the total amount earned through saving account was Rs 47,539, we recorded and income of Rs 19,13,698 on recurring deposits,” said assistant superintendent R S Gaikwad. The total number of transactions recorded on saving account and recurring account are 13,405 and 333 respectively. The sales of postage stamps procured Rs 6,565 and registered letters earned Rs 7,197.
