Massive funds for post office modernization

Dear Comrades,

Visakhapatnam: When was the last time you visited a post office in India? It must have been months, if not years, ago.

It is time for another visit as post offices across the country are undergoing a massive facelift.

The federal government has sanctioned 47 billion rupees to modernize 155,000 post offices in the country, Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Killi Kruparani yesterday told press persons in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

Improved post offices will give courier companies in the country a run for their money, the minister said.

She also said the government has launched a massive drive to upgrade postal infrastructure to overcome the delay in providing services, a perennial complaint from customers.

The Department of Posts will use 15 billion rupees from the project’s fund to install computers in rural post offices. This will help all post offices in the country to provide online services, the minister said.

Kruparani was in Andhra Pradesh’s port city to open the state’s first all-women post office, reported The Deccan Chronicle.

She said the initiative was part of the federal government’s focus on women empowerment, safety and gender equality.

“In the coming days, there will be more such post offices across the country for the convenience of women,” the minister said.

The government plans to open such offices in every metropolitan city and big towns, especially that have sizeable population of working women, Kruparani said.
Six women now manage the newly opened Mahila Dak Ghar in the MVP Colony area of Visakhapatnam.

The minister said the postal department will soon open four similar offices in Hyderabad, the state capital. It offers traditional and modern services such as registered and speed post, e-money order, Western Union money transfer, e-payment of utility bills besides savings bank facilities.

The department will set up an Automated Mail Processing Centre at Hyderabad’s main post office to avoid documentation for sorting, dispatching and delivering mails, the minister said.
