Dear Comrades,
MUMBAI: Governments across the world need to support reforms in postal services, stated senior officials of the United Nations
who expressed concern about the survival of physical post offices at a
time when technology is rapidly revolutionizing channels of
communication.
There are an estimated 600,000 postal offices across the world and the sector is among the world's biggest employers with more than 5 million staffers employed across the globe. While physical letters generate about half of post's revenues as per UN estimates, post offices like in India have been forced to diversify into areas such as e-commerce and financial services to sustain.
"Postal services across the world are adapting and redefining themselves for a 21st-century communications landscape," Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a press note, referring to postal services as "engines of trade, development and growth." "I urge Governments to use the tremendous potential of their postal networks to reach out to their citizens and bridge the gaps in today's information society," he added.
